Interactive Chinese Characters Project as a New Learning Method
‘Flip and Fly’: Interactive Chinese Characters

From 2009-2012, Hung Keung had a digital art project title Dao Gives Birth to One, which aimed to examine the possibility and limitations of combining Chinese calligraphy and painting in 2D and 4D practice. The project (a series and workshop) suggests how the "Yellow Box"’ concept of "play-appreciation," and the Dao’s cyclical sense of time and space, can be realized through digital technology, by shifting the role of the viewers from passivity to activity. Keung organized a series of workshops entitled ‘Flip and Fly’, where digital animation of Chinese character-writing became part of the installation Dao Gives Birth to One. The process of designing and implementing creative workshops of this kind is to explore and reinterpret the concept of wan shang (玩賞, ‘play-appreciation’), shifting the role of the audience from passivity to active participation and creativity.
Hung Keung is now bringing this workshop to ASHK so that you can once again experience and play with the beauty of Chinese characters. All writings from the workshop will be animated by a team of the artist and it will be shown in a presentation after two weeks.
