The mechanical writing set of version 1.0 of the Magnetic Pendulum Chinese Writing Robot series was completed in the spring of 2016. A brush was hanging in the center of the support structure and a round magnet was affixed to the root of the brush, creating a magnetic brush. Magnets were placed at various locations under the table, causing the brush to move like a pendulum. As the stem of the brush moved back and forth according to the rules of magnetic forces, seemingly chaotic strokes are written. The ‘automatic writing’ appeared to represent the natural forces of the universe. The abstract looking Chinese characters then became a new form of writing, driven by gravitational forces and the rules of nature.
